The ultimate guide: 12 tips to get the most out of Black Friday and Cyber Monday

Black Friday and Cyber Monday mean a ton of great offers, but also many temptations. This guide shows you how to get the most out of some of the biggest shopping days of the year and end up with great purchases and no buyers remorse.

The spending frenzy might be all-American. Still, Black Friday as a concept has grabbed hold of most of the world and countries like Great Britain, Germany and France is leading the spending spree outside of the USA.

For many nations, Black Friday is the biggest shopping day of the entire year with Cyber Monday following close behind on sales and popularity.

Over the years the concept has grown, and it’s no longer just clothes, electronics and appliances that you can get an excellent bargain for. Also, courses, trips and experiences are sold cheaper.

The many discounts can quickly throw your spending off balance, and if you lose focus, you might end up buying a lot of stuff you don’t really need or want. But with a plan, Black Friday and Cyber Monday can save you a lot of money.

Before Black Friday and Cyber Monday

Tip 1: Sign up for newsletters and follow your favourite brands on social media

By signing up for newsletters and by following your favourite brand and shops on their social media you’re sure to get the great offers, deals, discounts and important info - perhaps before everybody else.

It can also be a good idea to check catalogues and web sites for discounts.

Tip 2: Know what you want to buy

With a solid list of what you want to get, it’s easier to steer clear of those great offers, you don’t need. There are several things you can consider when planning your purchases.

  • Are there any brands or products you always use? See if there are any offers on them.
  • Have you dreamt of attending a particular course, or vacation but haven’t had the funds? See if there are any discounts on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
  • Black Friday and Cyber Monday is also a great occasion to save on Christmas gifts. Make sure to get wishlist from family and friends a few days before so you can prepare.

Tip 3: Make a budget

It’s a good idea to set a budget for your spendings. That way, the chances of you buying something you haven’t planned for is smaller.

Remember, you can use the Lunar app to set your budget for shopping.

Tip 4: Prioritize your purchases

Make up your mind of which purchases are the most important and prioritize to do them first.

If the products are only sold in a brick-and-mortar shop, consider calling the store a few days before to ask how many items of your product they have on hand.

You can also prepare by clicking your products into the online basket. Then you’ll be ready as soon as the sale kicks in. If you’re genuinely hardcore, you can even make a route for the shops you need to go to first.

Midnight: Black Friday is on

As soon as the clock strikes 00.00, Black Friday kicks off. So if you’re ready by the computer, you can make some great deal Thursday night after midnight.

Tip 5: Remember discount codes

If you signed up to newsletters remember to check them for discount codes before you press “buy” in the webshop. You can also search for codes online.

Remember you can save extra by using your Lunar Travel Card when shopping online in foreign webshops.

Tip 6: Keep calm

There are many ways for retailers to offer their goods. Some choose to do a discount on all their products, some offer 20% on selected items. Others offer time-limited discounts, and some let the reduction grow by the hour - letting your nerves decide when to strike.

On the morning of; Get up and shop

Even though you’ve been shopping since Thursday night, Friday morning is the time it really starts.

Tip 7: Set your alarm

Many shops open early on Black Friday, so make sure to set your alarm and get an early start if you plan on getting your hands on some of the really great offers.

Now is especially the time to prioritize those products where there are only a few in each store.

Tip 8: Get a little help from your friends

If your friends are just as mad about Black Friday as you, you can consider to join forces, split up and help each other get those discount bargains.

Remember to read the terms written in fine print, so you avoid problems if there are limitations to the amount of a specific product one person can buy.

After Black Friday comes Cyber Monday

When Black Friday is over, you can go home and enjoy your purchases. If you’ve shopped online, the wait might be a little longer. ;)

Didn’t you get all the things you set out to buy? Or are you simply just not done shopping?

Many retailers keep the spending party going over the weekend. If you’re not done shopping, you can still strike a deal on Cyber Monday.

The best way to prepare for Cyber Monday is to go through the first eight tips of this guide. There are also some extra things you can do to prepare just for Cyber Monday.

Most retailers and brands have an app you can shop from. Some brands even hand out discounts just for their app users. Download your favourite brands’ apps a few days before, to avoid missing any good deals.

Tip 10: Mind your timing

Especially on Cyber Monday webshops make use of those time-limited offers. Some of the best offers can be released in the early hours of Monday, so make sure to set your alarm.
