The Lunar Story
- 2015
Founded in Aarhus
Lunar is born in Aarhus to Danish entrepreneurs who want to challenge the traditional ways of banking. Their goal? To create a 100% digital bank that provides users with an easier, more understandable and more profitable way of managing money.
- 2018/19
Opens in Norway and Sweden
We expand to Norway and Sweden to make it possible for Swedish and Norwegian users to make the most of their money, too. We also open offices in Stockholm and Oslo.
- 2019
Gets a banking license
We become the first Danish fintech to receive a banking licence, and we’re now able to offer our users a bank covered by Danish deposit insurance. This also enables us to add several key features to our app.
- 2020
Launches Lunar Business
A new kind of business account is born. Lunar Business is an all-in-one solution, designed to make doing business easier for entrepreneurs.
- 2023
950,000 users and counting
Today, more than 950,000 people use Lunar to spend, save, invest and grow their businesses.

Raises €470m in capital
We’ve been supported on our journey to building the bank of the future by a large number of investors. As of 2024, we’ve raised €470m in capital, which all goes towards making an even better banking experience of our users.

Lunar was founded in 2015 by a group of tech entrepreneurs who wanted to rethink banking, payments and investments. The investors behind Lunar include HEARTLAND, Seed Capital, Orbit Alliance, Kinnevik, Tencent and Chr. Augustinus Fabrikker.
